The process of shipping a classic car is delicate and should only be handled by professionals. Obviously, when it comes to a vehicle of such value, its integrity is everything and it will need to be cautiously delivered. To ensure that you are providing your vehicle with the utmost care during its shipping process, there are five mistakes that should be avoided.

ONE: HASTILY PURCHASING SHIPPING SERVICES WITHOUT RESEARCH

Always research the transport companies nearby the vehicle’s home. If you are shipping the classic car overseas, find the most reliable international transporters. Use the internet for your research. Read the reviews and ratings left by past shipping customers. Make sure the company upholds a positive reputation before you call them for more information and a quote.

TWO: OPTING FOR THE CHEAPEST SHIPPING METHOD

Carefully decide what method of transport is best for your automobile. In most circumstances, crated or enclosed shipping methods are preferred for classic and vintage vehicles. These shipping methods offer a little more protection. Crated shipping is the most secure, but may require further preparation of the car before it can be delivered. Of course, if your automobile is only being shipped a short distance, open air services may be just fine.

THREE: SHIPPING YOUR VEHICLE WITHOUT INSURANCE COVERAGE

Your normal insurance policy won’t cover the vehicle while it is in the care of someone other than its owner. Fortunately, nearly all transport companies offer insurance free of charge. As you check out transport companies’ websites and call around, ask about insurance coverage. Make sure your vehicle will be fully protected during its transport.

FOUR: NOT FULFILLING REQUIREMENTS SET BY THE TRANSPORTER OR COUNTRY

Local transports won’t have as many requirements to fulfill. However, international transports will need to comply with the import policies set by the country you wish to ship the classic automobile to. This is necessary or the vehicle may be denied access into the country. Contacting the embassy of the country you are delivering to is highly recommended to all vehicle owners shipping internationally. Preparing for transport as demanded by the shipping company is also important for the security of those handling the delivery as well as the vehicle.

FIVE: NOT ASKING QUESTIONS

Always ask questions. Whenever a concern arises or you think of a question you would like to ask the transporter, write it down and make sure you ask. By inquiring, you will have a better feel for the transport company and how they operate. It is wise to write down a list of questions to ask potential shippers as you call around for quotes.

By avoiding the common mistakes made by many classic car owners, you can rest assured that you are making the right choices for your vehicle’s transport. Any reliable and reputable transporter will ease your mind during the process and answer any questions you may have. They will even help you choose a shipping method and prepare for the transport. For international transports, call at least two months in advance. This will give you and the auto shipping company plenty of time to prepare for the delivery.
