We test drive a 1961 MG MGA 1600 Roadster. As you can see in the photos, this is no ordinary MGA, but a very cool racer or as we like to call it…Speedster. First off, this car looks way badass in person with the cut down windshield and bumperless smoothed front apron. The MGAs have always been great looking cars with such great style that is still appealing today. As we drive this car around, it is constantly getting loads of attention and thumbs up. Even teenage kids seem to love it.
Noticeably right off the bat when we get into this car, we are surprised by the amount of room it has. It is a very spacious cockpit with plenty of leg room. The steering wheel sits a bit close, but there’s nothing uncomfortable that you have to squeeze around. Driving around town, and even at speed, the car was very easy to drive, and surprisingly enough, the cut-down windshield worked very well. The angle and size of the window just pushed the air right over our heads.
Sporting a 4-cylinder 1600cc engine, these cars are not overly powerful; they seem to be just right. It had plenty of pep and was very comfortable driving 65mph down the freeway. The transmission let out a few groans just like we are used to expecting in these old British cars, which we feel adds to the charm of these great old cars.
At the end of the day, this is an old MG and does have a little bit of a mind of its own, but it sure was a blast to drive. The power was great even for today’s driving conditions. The brakes were right on and the car handled like a dream. This is the perfect car for taking out and enjoying on nice days and generally just having a blast with.
