Bonneville Speed Week 2010 - Jaguar XJ6
Jaguar XJ6 powered by a Buick straight-8.

Every year in August we go up to Monterey for the Historic Reunion races and Pebble Beach Concourse. But this year we decided to do something a little different and go to Bonneville Salt Flats Utah for Speed Week. I have to say, getting to Bonneville was not quite as easy as the two-hour drive up to Monterey but was well worth the thirteen-hour drive each way.

The salt flats were extremely beautiful but very hot and very bright. It is an absolute must to wear lots of sun block and a big hat. While we were there, we were hoping to see some old British cars doing some speed runs but all we were able to find was one mid eighties Jaguar XJ6 and we really could not call it British because it was powered by a Buick straight-8. Though there were no true British cars running, we were able to find quite a few old British bikes; mostly Triumph’s and Norton’s.

While we were disappointed with the overall British turn out, we were very pleased to see some of the incredible cars that did turn out. One of our favorites was a car that ran on compressed air. The build quality and the thought that went into the car was simply amazing. There were all kinds of people trying to break all kinds of records and everything from a Vespa with a sidecar to a Team Vesco car that clocked 330 MPH. The trip was excellent and worth the journey but I think we will be headed to Monterey for the next few years.
